Le polveriere o santabarbara sono strutture o fabbricati per la custodia di materiale esplosivo. Genericamente si può dire che la polveriera è una particolare struttura adibita a deposito di munizioni, esplosivi, micce detonanti e artifizi vari, costruito e dislocato con particolari criteri al fine di evitare o quantomeno ridurre i pericoli di eventuali scoppi.
Le polveriere possono essere civili, contenendo anche giochi pirotecnici quali ad esempio i fuochi d’artificio, ma il termine è spesso utilizzato per indicare la struttura militare.
Essa infatti era il luogo dove venivano costituite le armi dell’esercito. Spesso queste strutture sono scavate all’interno delle montagne o al riparo di bunker. Ogni singola struttura doveva prevedere un ambiente asciutto e sempre ben aerato, oltre ad un tetto ben protetto dai fulmini. A powder magazine or santabarbara is a structure or building for storing explosive material. Generally speaking, a powder magazine is a particular structure used for storing ammunition, explosives, detonating fuses and various artifacts, built and located according to particular criteria in order to avoid or at least reduce the dangers of explosions.
A powder magazine may be civil, containing pyrotechnics such as fireworks, but the term is often used to indicate a military structure.
It was in fact the place where the army’s weapons were stored. Often these structures were dug into mountains or sheltered by bunkers. Every single structure had to provide a dry, well-ventilated environment, as well as a roof that was well protected from lightning.
