Powder Magazines

A powder magazine or santabarbara is a structure or building for storing explosive material. Generally speaking, a powder magazine is a particular structure used for storing ammunition, explosives, detonating fuses and various artifacts, built and located according to particular criteria in order to avoid or at least reduce the dangers of explosions.
A powder magazine may be civil, containing pyrotechnics such as fireworks, but the term is often used to indicate a military structure.
It was in fact the place where the army’s weapons were stored. Often these structures were dug into mountains or sheltered by bunkers. Every single structure had to provide a dry, well-ventilated environment, as well as a roof that was well protected from lightning. In a powder magazine, fire fighting was always kept as a service of prime importance. (Taken from “Wikipedia”)
